Movie: Bride and Prejudice

Movie Summary

Pride and Prejudice the movie is about an Indian family called the Bakshi family who has four unmarried daughters. Mrs. Bakshi is very eager to marry her daughters to rich men so that the Bakshi family can live comfortably without any problems over money. At a traditional Indian ball a man named Balraj falls in love with the oldest Bakshi daughter, Jaya. Balraj goes to the ball with his very rich friend, William Darcy. William Darcy meets the second oldest Bakshi daughter, Lalita, and falls in love with her. When William Darcy goes over to speak to Lalita about Indian traditions and arranged marriages she is very insulted by the comments he makes. She sees him as a shallow insensitive individual who is disrespectful to the Indian tradition. Balraj is so in love with Jaya that he invites her to one of the hotels that William Darcy owns. Lalita accompanies her sister. Lalita is still very upset with William Darcy ans later on meets a young man by the name of Johny Wickam. Johny Wickam falls in love with Lalita ans Lalita falls in love with him. William Darcy sees Lalita with Wickam and is very shocked. He warns Lalita that Johny Wickam is not the person to get into a relationship with. Lalita disregards William Darcy's advice. While all this drama is going on, a young man from California who is very close to the Bakshi family comes along to meet the four girls and see which one he wants as his wife. His name is Kohli and he is a very rich and successful young man. Since Jaya was already taken, Mrs.Bakshi suggests that Kohli consider Lalita for his future wife. Lalita does not like the idea and rejects him. A couple days later, the Bakshi family gets the news that Balraj and William Darcy are leaving India. Jaya is very upset but Balraj hopes to see her soon again. After Balraj's departure the Bakshi family feels very hopeless of getting any of their daughter's married. Since Lalita has rejected Kohli, Kohli decides to propose to Lalita's best friend Chandra. Chandra accepts and moves with Kohli to California. The Bakshi family gets an invitation to the wedding and California and they travel to California but take a quick stop in London to see Balraj. Unfortunetly Balraj is not in London. In the airport Lalita meets William Darcy who is also travelling on the same plane to California. Lalita and William Darcy have a nice talk on the plane and they begin to bond. In California William Darcy tells Lalita that he loves her and his true feeling for her are unvieled. That day Lalita falls in love with Darcy. Lalita gets a nice surprise that Balraj has proposed to Jaya and William Darcy also proposes to Lalita. Both Jaya and Lalita get married in India and it is a happy ending for the Bakshi family.

Connections: Book and Movie

Similarities:
1) Many of the character's personalities were the same. In both the book and the movie many of each character's emotions and feeling for one another were very similar.

2) The plot was very similar and almost identical. The love affairs that were formed were the same affairs between the same characters in both the book and the movie. This similarity contributed to the excellent flow of the story as a whole.

3) For most of the character's, the names were kept the same in the movie as they were in the book. Main characters' names like William Darcy were kept identical in each.

Differences:
1) The setting of the movie was different from that of the book.

2) Some of the characters' names were changed in the movie all for the purpose of corressponding with the setting of the movie. Since the movie mainly took place in India many charcters' names were Indian.

Film Terms In Action:

1) Establishing Shot: The movie started off with a scene of Armitsar, India giving the audience a sense of the setting.

2) Bird's Eye Shot: This type of shot was used at the beginning if the movie to give the audience a feel of Amritsar, India. This shot enables the viewer to vertically look staright dowm at Amritsar, India.

3) Point of View Shot: a close-up of a character to portray facial expressions.
Scene In Movie: A close-up was used when Lalita was playing her guitar in her room.

4) Long Shot: When Lalita was shown working at the Bakshi farm. You could see her from head to toe.

5) Cut: This was done in the scene where the scene of the Bakshi farm was replaced by a scene of the inside of the interior of the house where the bride to be was getting ready.

6) Track: This camera movement was used in the scene where Lalita was mad at William Darcy and she ran away from him. The camera was following Lalita as she moved away from William Darcy.
